Client Project Case Study: 8-Bit Curls

Problem Statement:

Client needs a logo and a brand name for an indie game studio she would like to make. She wants it personalized, and very recognizable as a video game company.

Design Process:

After talking with the client, we landed on a curly hair design with a video game controller pair of eyes, an easily recognizable video game symbol.

After some rough drafts for concepts, I started to refine the piece, making sure the curly hair was the centerpiece and attention grabber. We also had Curly Games as a placeholder name, but we would later refine that to something a bit more unique and solidified.

I messed around with the logo, font, and naming for a while, and after reaching out to the client, we both decided an 8-bit logo would go great with the look and feel of what she was going for.

I turned my attention to the name once more, and I decided to use AI as an asset to start generating some names for the company. After pushing the AI for a while to generate a lot of potential words, I took some of the ideas, tweaked them, and brought them to the client, where we settled on 8-Bit Curls. I found this was effective, as not only was it clearly personalized to the curly hair of my client, it was also easily recognizable as a video game company due to the 8-Bit tag on it. There was also an added play on words, as ‘curls’ is a programming term, and my client was very involved with the coding world.

After some play with fonts, styles, and the 8-Bit remake, we landed on our finished product. I ran into multiple hurdles with finding out how to do the 8-bit style, the naming itself, and capturing the vision that the client had, but through trial and error, using the tools at my disposal including a conservative use of AI, and clear communication, I was able to make a product that the client was very happy with.

★★★★★

I am absolutely shocked by the great logo Dane designed, especially considering I gave him almost nothing to work with.

I needed a logo for a private company I was making, but I didn’t know what I wanted the logo to be or even a name for the company. I only knew I wanted it to feel professional, personal, and be obvious that it was a game studio.

Well. He figured it out. Through a series of insightful questions and rapid iterations, he nailed the exact impression I wanted.

Client Project Case Study: Craft Projects

Problem Statement:

Client needs two craft projects tweaked from ideas that they found online into something better designed with very good resolution/settings for printing specifically.

Finished Product:

Design Process

The biggest problems I had hit with these projects were making sure that they were made with the final craft project in mind. The client reached out saying that she was going to print these out in high quality, and that they were going to be cut out and glued onto wooden blocks that were very specific in sizing.

To combat this, and make sure that any size variations were accounted for, we decided to actually expand the images to slightly larger than it was originally, so she could cut them out to be the exact size of the blocks that she had.

She was very happy with the end result, and I made sure to send multiple variations to send out to print in case anything needed to be adjusted with the printer she was sending them to.
